The Haliwa-Saponi Indian Tribe will begin accepting applications for our 2026 fall semester and 2027 spring semester College Student Housing Assistance Program at 8:00am on June 1, 2026. Applications will be accepted until 5:00pm on June 30, 2026. Assistance will be in the form of direct payment to the college or university to supplement the undergraduate housing costs of an eligible applicant selected to participate in the Program.


Who Is Eligible?


Eligibility is limited American Indians accepted as a full-time student to a post-secondary educational institution that are:


1)    Income eligible; and

2)    Tribally enrolled; and

3)    GPA of 2.0 and higher; and

4)    Age 16 and over by first day of school; and

5)    Preference shall apply for Haliwa-Saponi citizens that:

  • A.    Are returning participants
  • B.    Voted in last year’s tribal elections
  • C.    Primarily reside in the Tribe’s territory
  • D.    Are disabled, elderly, or active-duty military/veteran


Application Requirements:


To be considered for participation, an applicant must provide a complete application to the Tribe by the closing date and time, which includes the following:

  • 1)    Proof of GPA; and
  • 2)    Tribal citizenship documentation; and
  • 3)    Proof of identity (driver’s license, social security card, etc.); and
  • 4)    Housing agreement from a post-secondary college or university; and
  • 5)    FAFSA Award letter and proof of income and school expenses documents; and
  • 6)    Student acceptance documentation from a post-secondary college or university; and
  • 7)    If requesting preference for residency, civic engagement, disability, elderly, military/veteran, or returning participant, proof of eligibility for preference may also be required.


Participation Requirements:


Eligible applicants selected to participate in the Program shall be required to:

  • 1)    Maintain a GPA of 2.0 or higher; and
  • 2)    Maintain civic and social engagement in the Tribe.
