Legal Status


The Haliwa-Saponi Tribe, Inc. is a sovereign Indigenous nation, with its sovereignty reaffirmed by the State of North Carolina in 1965 pursuant to N.C. General Statute 71A-5. The Tribe functions as the governing body for its citizens, exercising inherent sovereign authority.


The Tribe owns and oversees Haliwa-Saponi Tribe, Inc., a North Carolina nonprofit corporation incorporated in 1974 and recognized as tax-exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. This nonprofit entity serves as the Tribe’s administrative and fiscal arm for managing programs, receiving grants and donations, and supporting tribal initiatives, including but not limited to cultural preservation, education, economic development, health and human services, and community programming.
